Weekly Update 12/16

We made it through our last full week before Winter Break!! Only two more days to go! :)

Upcoming Events:

12/21 - 1/3: Winter Break

I hope everyone has a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Holtmann

Dashbot Competition

Today several students from our class competed in the Dashbot competition where they had to use coding to have their robots go through several obstacles in a 3 minute time limit.  They all did an amazing job and I was so proud of their problem solving skills that they used when things didn't go as planned!

This is the rubric that was used to give each team a score in the competition!

Happy Friday!! It has been an awesome week in Room 35!

Here's what we've been up to...

Science:  This week we reviewed chapter 3 and took our test today!

Math:  In math we learned how to divide decimals by whole numbers and decimals.  We used models and long division to find out answers!  We have a math test (chapter 6) coming up on Wednesday.  Please check the blog for resources on how to study!

Writing:  We began working on our memoir unit this week.  We have spent several days talking about how memoirs have a big theme or message and then we pick a story from our lives to help show how that message has influenced our lives.  They are doing a great job!

Reading: We continued our social issues book clubs this week.  We discussed universal issues and how we can compare social issues across many texts.  We also talked about how the groups we are involved in can change the way we interpret and react to situations.

Upcoming Events:

12/14: Caroling Field Trip

Please remember to send in your child's signed permission slip and $4 so that they can attend the field trip on Wednesday.

Weekly Update 12/2

Happy Friday!! I can't believe it is already December and we are only 2 1/2 weeks away from Winter Break-- time flies when you're having fun!!

Science-- We are wrapping up Chapter 3 (classification of living things) this week and will start reviewing for our test at the beginning of next week.  The test has a lot of material so I posted the study guide a few days ago so that kids could get a head start on studying.  The test will be next Friday 12/ 9!

Math-- This week we worked on multiplying decimals by whole numbers and other decimals and discussed the properties of multiplication (commutative, identity, and associative).  Next week we are going to work on dividing decimals!

Writing-- We finished our informational pieces and celebrated with the whole 5th grade yesterday!  They should be very proud of all of their hard work.  We are beginning our memoir unit next!

Reading-- Book clubs have been our focus this week.  We are working on identifying social issues in our books and using our book clubs as an opportunity to discuss how characters words, actions, and reactions help us understand not only our characters but also the issue at hand.  The kids have done so well with book clubs this time around and seem to love the opportunity to discuss books with friends!

Social Studies-- We finished up our explorer projects this week and presented them to the class!

Upcoming Events:

Weekly Update 11/18

Image result for thankful quotes

As we are approaching the week of Thanksgiving, I wanted to express how truly thankful I am to be a teacher to the best kiddos in the world!  They make me smile each and every day!

We have had a great week in 5th grade! Here's what we've been up to...

Science: During science this week we have been learning about how we classify animals.  We have been discussing vertebrates and invertebrates and the characteristics that each of those groups share.  I have posted a link to some flashcards for Chapter 3 on our google classroom so that the kiddos can have a jump start on practicing some of the vocabulary words from this chapter.  There are a lot so I  figured the sooner they could start practicing, the better!  The test will not be until after Thanksgiving, though!

Math: In math we wrapped up chapter 5 (adding and subtracting decimals) and boy did these kiddos ROCK it!  Their test scores were amazing and I am so proud of all of their hard work!  We started chapter 6 (multiplying and dividing decimals) today!

Writing:  We are getting close to finishing up our informational piece.  The kids have been working on finishing up their drafts and are looking forward to editing/ revising and publishing their pieces very soon!

Reading:  We just finished our nonfiction reading unit yesterday and had a fun little celebration!  We have also been working on comparing ideas across multiple texts and citing evidence from the text-- we are making lots of progress!  We will be beginning our social issues book clubs next week.

Social Studies: The kids are working on a project that requires them to research two explorers and compare and contrast them.  They will present their projects at the end of next week!

Reminder: Our helping hands campaign is still going on!  We would appreciate a donation of canned food, paper products, cleaning products, etc if you are able!! We are working towards a class goal of 150 items (we have 129!!) so that we can have a pj day!

Upcoming Events:

11/23 - 11/25: No School (Thanksgiving Break)

Have a great weekend and stay warm!!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Holtmann
