A Note About Valentine's Day

Image result for valentines day

Since Valentine's Day is quickly approaching I wanted to make sure to send out a reminder letting you know that because of the new rule about food items, students are not allowed to bring valentines to school that have any candy or food items attached.  We are planning on having a non-food related celebration in our classroom that day.  Sorry for any inconvenience!

Weekly Update 1/27

Happy Friday, everyone!

Here's what we've been up to this week...

Science:  This week in science we finished up our last lesson for our space chapter (chapter 9).  We learned about asteroids, comets, meteors, dwarf planets, and moons.  We will be having our chapter test next Friday, February 3rd.  I will post a study guide by Monday!

Math:  In math, we began our second chapter on fractions.  We learned how to add and subtract fractions with like and unlike denominators.  We used least common multiples to help us find a common denominator and used greatest common factors to make sure our answer was in simplest form.

Writing:  We are working on our second literary essay currently.  We learned how to organize our essay, use quotes from the story as evidence to support our claim, and how to notice techniques that the author uses.  We will be drafting for the next several days and then publishing!

Reading:  We set a goal to finish our fantasy book club books by today but a few groups are still finishing up so hopefully they will be beginning their second book early next week.  They have been practicing finding the internal and external quests of our characters and finding universal themes within our texts.

Social Studies:  The kiddos are working on a project where they are choosing either the middle, southern, or New England colonies and then creating a commercial, slideshow, brochure, etc to convince others to move to their land.  They are so creative and are having a great time with the project!

Upcoming Events:
2/1: Homerun Club (bring snack)
2/3: Science Test
2/7: Math Test

I hope everyone has a great weekend!  Please make sure to send in Sheldon field trip permission slips next week!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Holtmann

Weekly Update: 1/20

Happy Friday, everyone!

Here's what we've been up to...

Science:  We've been learning about the solar system and the difference between the inner and outer planets.  The kiddos have been working on reading about each of the planets and creating a foldable to showcase their new learning!

Math:  We have been working on finding the least common multiple and greatest common factor for 2 or 3 numbers.  We've also spent time learning how to convert a fraction into a decimal and then into a percent.  Today we practiced working backward!

Writing:  We started reading short stories and taking notes for our second literary essay.  The kids are analyzing a short text and then pulling out lessons that the character and text teach.  They will then be using their notes to assemble a literary essay next week.

Reading:  We have continued our work in fantasy book clubs.  We have been studying our characters and how their problems and choices help us learn more about them.  The kids  are loving this fantasy unit and are really into our read aloud-- Narnia!

Special Announcements:
1. Jump rope for heart packets are coming home today with kiddos so please check their backpacks!

2. We started D.A.R.E. this week and the kids loved it!  I think it is going to be a very fun second half of the year!

Upcoming Events:
1/ 25: Early Release (wear your Flyer Family shirt)
1/27: Family Bingo (6:30pm)

I hope that you have a great weekend and enjoy the nice weather tomorrow!

Weekly Update 1/6

Image result for Happy new year

Happy new year! I hope everyone had a great Winter Break!

This week has been a great start to the second half of the school year!

This week we spent a lot of time setting expectations and goals for our upcoming quarter.  It is always great to get a fresh start after a break! We reflected on what we were successful with last quarter and also talked about how we can make this quarter even better.

We kicked off our units/chapters in reading, writing, math, and science this week.  In math we are working on our first fraction chapter of the year.  In science we are learning about space.  In writing, we began our literary essay unit and in reading we are starting fantasy book clubs!  We have lots of fun and exciting things coming our way and I look forward to seeing all of the kiddos grow and learn throughout the year!

Have a great weekend!

Sincerely,
Mrs. Holtmann
