Happy Saturday! I hope everyone is enjoying this beautiful weather! Here is what we were up to during our first full week of 5th grade...
Science: In science we started setting up our science notebooks and began talking about observations. We went outside and observed objects in nature on Friday and will continue our conversations about the different types of observations we can make, this coming week.
Reading: We kicked off our first unit by writing our year-long reading goals. We discussed the importance of reflecting on ourselves as readers in order to write a realistic goal. We will be diving deeper into our unit this coming week.
Writing: We took our writing pre-assessment by writing a personal narrative. Yesterday we began talking about strategies we can use to think of a really good personal narrative story that we can focus on throughout this writing unit. Some of those strategies were thinking of an important person in your life or thinking of the first/ last time you did something.
Math: We started chapter one by reviewing place value and also practiced using standard and word form for numbers into the millions. We also learned about expanded notation!
Here is a quick video that explains the difference between expanded form and expanded notation: Expanded Form vs. Expanded Notation
It was a busy and fun week! I'm looking forward to another great week!
Upcoming Events:
(Thursday) 8/31: 5th grade curriculum night @ 7 PM
Sincerely,
Mrs. Holtmann
